Our Camp at Kozhithorai

One Earth Foundation team was determined to hold a Kurumba Art Revival Camp for the enthusiastic tribal children in the small village of Kozhithorai – tucked away, below Mammaram (a village on the state highway between Mettupalayam and Kotagiri) and approachable by trek through a coffee plantation and a small patch of ever green forest.  This was a modest village of 8-9 huts. One Earth Foundation had informed the village headman of Kolithorai of our intentions and date / time of holding this unique nonetheless vibrant camp.

As we walked up to the single room school outside the hamlet we took in the fresh mountain aroma and acquainted ourselves with our then unfamiliar surroundings. We waited patiently to see how many children would show up.  There were none in sight other than an elderly Kurumba lady tending her flock of goats.  Soon we got word through a helpful passerby that some children had gathered in a hut about 500 mtrs from where we were waiting and we dropped in to see if that was our group.  Yes, indeed, that was the group of our latest batch of potential Kurumbas artists.  They collected in a small thatched hut where we held our art camp.   The young ones were very enthusiastic and we had excellent participation from both children and some of their equally fascinated mothers.

As always, they were excited to receive their art books, colour bottles and brushes and  assured us that they would practice all the motifs and techniques they had learnt from our proficient kurumba artist.  It was satisfying to see such enthusiasm and we made up our minds to return in August to once again try our luck at a follow up camp, hoping it will be as successful as this one.

Here are some pictures of the the art camp and the village of Kolithorai.
