Trek through a Kurumbas village

We are pleased to share with you some images from our recent treks through some of the Kurumbas villages.  These hamlets are located between 3000 – 5000 ft above MSL and usually on very steep slopes.  Lack of basic amenities is evident and clean water remains a challenge. Tribal Art Camps initiated in Burliar Region of Nilgiris

  The Burliar hills (ranging from 2500 ft till 3500 ft above MSL) en-route from Mettupalayam to Coonoor is home to about 5% of the total Kurumbas tribal population.   ASs you are aware, the Kurumbas are a Schedules tribe and also declared a Primitive Tribal Group (PTG) and the Kurumbas are found only in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. Kozhithorai Village Art Camp finally goes ahead!

Kurumbas Art Camp at Bhaviyoor for tribal children

Hi Out very first camp held at the village of Bhaviyoor was a great success with excellent participation.  The children were very enthusiastic to learn the various motifs that were taught to them in this first camp.  The parents and other village adults who watched the camp in progress were surprised at their own ignorance of this traditional skill.  There were many questions which our team was happy to answer.  [ Read More ]

Revival Camp II – Vellaricombai

Under its Kurumbas Art Revival Initiative (KARI), One Earth Foundation conducted a second art workshop for the tribal children of Vellaricombai village (Kurumbas settlement).  This small hamlet with about 10 huts, can be reached on foot after an hours trek from Mamaram – on the road to Kotagiri. Art Camp at Semnarai Village

Art Camp for Tribal Children – Kozhithorai
