AS Level Students lend support to KARI

KARI Awareness Camp at Halakkarai School – Nilgiris

Mumbai Students Group (IBDP) study Tribal Art & Medicine

Our recent Kurumba tribe study group connected excellently with the Tribal residents of Vellaricombai.  Even under rain conditions, the students were enthusiastic to undertake their projects and learn about the history, culture and current challenges of this tribe.  An art workshop was held in the covered small verandah of a tribal hut and our local artist was surprised to see the skills displayed by some of our students.  In subsequent discussions in  [ Read More ]

KARI Awareness Camp – IBDP students Pune

KARI organized an awareness camp for IB Diploma level students from Pune.  The day started from our Base camp in Coonoor with a 1 hour downhill bus ride to a small hamlet called Mamaram.  The group was met there by our artist who trekked with us through tea gardens and evergreen deciduous forests in the mid ranges of the Nilgiris till we reached a small hamlet with about 10 – 12 huts.  [ Read More ]

Book marks by tribal children

  In one of our recent workshops, some young tribal children made these bookmarks. Kurumba motifs were drawn on hand made paper of different colours.  They looked great!  KARI team left them with lots of hand made paper, colours and paint brushes to practice this craft.  Keep it up. KARI Team

Natural Colours used in Kurumbas Paintings

  Dear Friends Did you know that traditionally the Kurumbas artists used feathers and natural colours obtained from tree bark and leaves for their paintings.  KARI seeks to revive the use of these natural  colours.  We will also ensure that this learning is passed on to all participating children of our camps and workshops. Gift Ideas
